Tony Bennett - I left my heart in San Francisco

Union Bank of California promo. Beautifully danced by Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu. SF own local halau, lend their talking hands to the story of the city by the bay.

I recently had contact with the director, Jim Yager, and he provided some background on this amazing work of art.

Jim: "It was inspired when I saw Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu perform their choreography of this song at KQED for an event. It was one of those lightning strike moments when I saw the whole film produced in my mind's eye as they were dancing gracefully in front of a black curtain. It was just plain serendipity ..."

"We filmed Hula SF just a few weeks after 9/11 in 2001. We had been making production plans since mid-summer, and had delayed the production a couple of times as their was so much fear and uncertainty in the air here in the city. We finally spent two days with the dancers in all the locations you see in the video in early October, and I will never forget the response from those watching along the sidelines as we filmed. Tears of joy filled their eyes as Mr Bennett's song permeated the air, and the dancers swayed and told the story with their hands. It was a great emotional release for all of us, I think, and a reminder that their was still simple beauty and romance in a world that had been so tilted off its axis. It was one of those pure experiences I will never ever forget. I figured it would air for a few months on KQED and then be forgotten. Amazingly, it's been on their air nearly every day in the six years since then."

Went out onto the bay with a friend on his boat, we went to pay homage to the old war horses, the one in particular was the USS Iowa, too bad we couldn't get aboard.

Queen Mary Slips In - GBTimelapse
view - 1:5

Timelapse software by Granite Bay Software. A spectacular entrance: The Queen Mary 2 luxury liner made its maiden call to the Port of San Francisco on February 4, 2007. Surrounded by a flotilla of ships, yachts and escorted by a San Francisco fire boat, Queen Mary 2 circled the harbor before docking at Pier 27. Thanks to Cindy, Kristin, Rosie and Bill (the GBTimelapse film crew) for their help running six cameras in three bay area locations. This video was created using GBTimelapse and a Canon digital still camera. To see how it was made, visit http://www.gbtimelapse.com .

The Queen Mary 2, the largest ship to ever pass under the Golden Gate Bridge, arrived on Feb. 4, 2007.

It was quite a sight. The magnificent vessel was headed to Pier 27. Its last port of call was 26 days and 14,145 miles ago in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

About 2,000 of her 2,638 guests will be getting off in San Francisco. Tomorrow the ship sets sail for Hawaii in yet another stop on its 81-day around-the-world voyage.

The USS Nimitz (CVN-68), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, goes under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California on May 27, 2012, the 75th anniversary of the opening of the bridge. The video is a little shaky because it was very windy.
