The Port of Hopewell has a rich Civil War history and some good restaurants and shops. There are also many boat and fishing ramps throughout the city.

Visitors to the Port of Hopewell will want to see the Weston Plantation, an 18th Century home overlooking the Appomattox River. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Weston Manor preserves much of the home's original interior. The guided tour of this Port of Hopewell landmark includes three floors with period antiques and reproductions.
Tours includes stories about the people who lived through one of America's most challenging periods, the Civil War. Slaves made up the workforce. During the Civil War, and plantation was part of the war zone. After the war, an immigrant family started its new life here. Two dependencies, the summer kitchen and the laundry, have been reconstructed based on archaeological studies. The tours are conducted throughout the year from Monday through Saturday from 10am until 4:30pm. Sunday tours are held from 1 until 4:30pm, and group tours can be arranged by appointment. The grounds and the pier to the Appomattox are open to the public without charge.
Visitor to the Port of Hopewell can also visit Grant's Headquarters at City Point, from which Grant directed the 10-month long Siege of Petersburg. The tour includes the parlor, library, outbuildings, Grant's cabin, and a 15-minute video. The headquarters is closed on Federal holidays.
The City Point Open Air Museum in the Port of Hopewell is a self-guided walking tour that includes 25 points, mostly from the Civil War era. Outdoor storyboards explain the people and events of City Point, and a brochure is available at the Visitor Center.
