The citizens of San Juan Island own the Port of Friday Harbor which includes a marina, boat launch, Jackson Beach, and Friday Harbor Airport. The Port of Friday Harbor's main goal is to maintain a healthy economy wand to improve San Juan Island's social, natural, and economic environments. The Port of Friday Harbor Marina supports 20 businesses that include fresh seafood, whale-watching cruises, a chandlery, several great restaurants, and air charter flight services.
The Port of Friday Harbor is governed by a Board of Commissioners with three members elected to overlapping six-year terms. Meeting twice a month, the board invites the public to attend all Port Commission meetings. The Port of Friday Harbor employs 20 year-round staff and 12 additional summer staff.
The Port of Friday Harbor was created by citizens' vote in 1950. The Marina was built in the 1970s and has been continually improved. At first, fishing vessels were the main traffic at the Port of Friday Harbor, but today pleasure boaters bring as many as 14 thousand guest boat nights every year. In 1985, the Port of Friday Harbor bought a wonderful sand beach near the harbor, and a free public boat launch was added at Jacksons Beach.
The Port of Friday Harbor is an all-year shelter for both fishing and recreational vessels that offers easy access to the nearby downtown and business district and services. Today, the Port of Friday Harbor Marina has 500 slips, 100 slips available for overnight guests, and accommodate yachts to 45.7 meters (150 feet). Visiting boats must make reservations for visits in the summer season. Large boats tie alongside floating concrete breakwaters. The Port of Friday Harbor Island Petroleum Services fuel pier is located north of the Ferry Terminal.
Boaters and crew have quick connections between the Port of Friday Harbor and Seattle's Lake Union via scheduled seaplane service, and passenger ferry services link the Port of Friday Harbor to Seattle, Bellingham, and Port Townsend.
Port of Friday Harbor facilities are staffed seven days a week (except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day). Hours vary by season. After-hours fueling is available for a small fee.
The Port of Friday Harbor free boat launch located at Jackson Beach is a two-sided paved boat launch open from dawn until dusk. Restrooms are located next to the boat launch.
Passenger ferries offer connections from the Port of Friday Harbor to Seattle, Anacortes, Bellingham, and Port Townsend. The Washington State Ferry offers year-round auto and passenger ferries between Anacortes and the Port of Friday Harbor. Puget Sound Express offers seasonal passenger ferries to Port Townsend. Clipper Navigation operates seasonal passenger ferry service between the Port of Friday Harbor and Seattle. San Juan Cruises has seasonal passenger ferry service to Bellingham.
