The City of Belfast's Harbor Department is the port authority in Belfast Harbor. The Harbormaster is responsible for overseeing the permitting of moorings and other marine structures in Belfast Harbor. The Harbormaster also oversees the management of Belfast Harbor waters and enforces state, federal regulations, and municipal laws in the harbor as well as conducting water searches and rescues.
Belfast Harbor's Harbormaster issues permits for city moorings. An annual permit costs $60. Belfast Harbor rents transient slips and moorings at the City Landing and a few slips at Thompson's Wharf. There is usually a waiting list for seasonal slips that is maintained by the Harbormaster. In 2005, the Harbormaster issued 350 mooring permits.
Belfast Harbor does not have a designated anchorage area at present, but the city is creating one. Today, boaters can anchor in the silt-and-gravel anchorage area ground outside the mooring field. For transient boaters, Belfast Harbor has two designated areas: the City Landing and Heritage Park next to the Landing.
Belfast Harbor is located on the Northwest Penobscot Bay at the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River. The entry channel to Belfast Harbor is 4.6 meters (15 feet) deep. Alongside depth at the fuel dock is 3.7 meters (12 feet).
Belfast Harbor has two face docks. One of these has 33.5 meters (110 feet) of uninterrupted space, and the other has 36.6 meters (120 feet) of uninterrupted space. Depth at the moorings ranges from 1.8 to 6.1 meters (6 to 20 feet), and depth at the slips is from 1.2 to 4.6 meters (4 to 15 feet). Belfast Harbor has an average tide of 3.2 meters (10.5 feet).
A fuel dock is available with 89 octane gasoline and diesel fuel, and there is a pump-out station for holding tanks. There is a launch ramp for slipholders at Belfast Harbor as well as help with docking, dock carts, and trash pick-up service. There are restroom and shower facilities, and ice is available in blocks and cubes.
Belfast Harbor offers offices services that include messages, mail, Fedex and UPS deliveries, package holding, a data port, and a book swap. There is also a boater waiting area. Summer hours are from 7:30am to 7:00pm every day. Off season hours are 7:30am to 3:30pm from Monday through Friday.
Maine Coast Tender Service Inc. owns, and Maineport Towboats, Inc. operates the Marshall Wharf in Belfast Harbor where it moors company-owned tugs. A tug-dispatch office building is located at the rear of the wharf. While reservations are not required for renting overnight slips and moorings, they are recommended.
Located in the Inner Harbor, Belfast Boatyard Inc. offers full-service moorings and slips in Belfast Harbor's downtown area. Within walking distance of a range of services, shopping, and entertainment opportunities, Belfast Boatyard also offers full-service boat repair, storage and hauling, and yacht restoration.
Proud to be a premier yacht yard, Front Street Shipyard offers dockage for local boaters and cruisers in their new marina that can accommodate all sizes of yachts and power boats. The marina has slips for yachts up to 36.6 meters (120 feet). Slips are equipped with 30-, 50-, and 100-amp shore power. Water is available on the docks.
Belfast Harbor's Front Street Shipyard was established by experienced and innovative yacht builders. The shipyard offers a range of services that include paint and varnish, composite repairs, carpentry and joinery, rigging, electrical systems and electronics, gas and diesel engines, plumbing and sanitation systems, and hydraulics.
Front Street Shipyard also builds custom yachts up to 61 meters (200 feet). The company was founded by experienced boat builders from Brooklin Boat Yard and Rockport Marine as well as from composite builder Kenway Corporation.
Belfast Harbor's Stay Put Mooring Services offers a variety of services. Their general mooring inspections include examining mooring hardware, cleaning float ball and pendant, and submitting the proper paperwork to Belfast Harbor's harbormaster. Stay Put offers mooring winterization services that include removing pendant and float ball and buoy pick-up. They will install a winter buoy, clean and store hardware, and repaint the float ball. They also offer mooring summarization services.
