The Port of Wrangell is governed by an elected five-member Port Commission that serve staggered three-year terms. The Port of Wrangell provides facilities and services that include three city-operated boat harbors, a deep-water dock for large vessel moorage, and three U-shaped summer floats with loading and unloading zone for small boat tours.
The Port of Wrangell also has on on-duty customs agent, an airplane float, a boat launch, and a marine repair facility and storage yard. There are permanent docks and slips in the Port of Wrangell for transient moorage and a barge ramp with upland storage and a deep-water dock with upland storage yard for unloading barges.
The Port of Wrangell is equipped with grids and hoists, a 150-ton travel lift, two fuel docks, floats and net racks, a search and rescue squad, and oil response equipment and personnel. The moorage slips and transient float in the Port of Wrangell have power and water, and there is a private shipyard and several boat construction and repair companies. The Port of Wrangell is home to two state-operated airports and a State of Alaska Marine Highway Ferry facility.
The Port of Wrangell has three full-service commercial and recreational harbors and deep-water facilities that can serve a wide range of vehicle sizes and functions including commercial fishing boats, barges, tugs, large commercial vessels, and small craft.
The Port of Wrangell Harbor, located downtown, has 230 slips for large and small vessels. It also has a transient moorage float and a deep-draft float for tugs. This Port of Wrangell harbor also contains tidal grids, an airplane float, two fuel docks, a work float and net rack, and hydraulic hoists. Each float is served by power, water, and waste oil and garbage collection.
About eight kilometers (five miles) from downtown, the Port of Wrangell's Shoemaker Bay Harbor contains 250 slips for large and small recreational and commercial fishing vessels. The harbor also contains a boat launch, tidal grids, a work float, and a hydraulic hoist. The Shoemaker Bay Harbor is the Port of Wrangell's recreational complex that also has a park, shelter, a playground and tennis courts, camping and RV facilities, and several trails.
About 1.6 kilometers (one mile) from downtown is the Port of Wrangell's new Heritage Harbor that is dedicated to transient moorage, commercial fishing vessels, and large yachts.
The Port of Wrangell Harbormaster Office is at Reliance Float in Wrangell Harbor. Vessels over 30.5 meters (100 feet) should notify the Harbor Master at least eight hours before arrival to get moorage instructions. Most transient moorage is in Wrangell Harbor at Reliance Float; however, it is possible to make arrangements for moorage at the Port of Wrangell in either Shoemaker Bay or Heritage Harbor.
The Port of Wrangell's harbor is near downtown where a full range of shops and restaurants are available. Showers and a laundromat are adjacent to Wrangell Harbor. There is a restaurant, lodge, and laundromat about 1/4 mile north of Shoemaker Harbor. Two cab companies take visitors from Shoemaker Bay Harbor to downtown Port of Wrangell. There are also public showers in the City Recreational Facility. Several boat maintenance and repair companies in the Port of Wrangell offer aluminum fabrication, woodworking, welding, fiberglassing, painting, and diesel mechanic services.
The Port of Wrangell's City Dock is also the cruise ship dock. Located at the north end of downtown, this T-shaped dock has a face of 123.4 meters (405 feet). It has a breasting pier head of 172.2 meters (565 feet) and a stern mooring dolphin off the northeast end of the dock with 68.6 meters (225 feet) of berthing space, all with alongside depth of 10.7 meters (35 feet). Smaller cruise ships and yachts moor at the inside face. Charter vessels can load/unload passengers at the U-shaped summer float. Larger cruise ships can anchor in front of this Port of Wrangell dock to transfer passengers to the summer floats.
The Port of Wrangell's Barge Ramp in Wrangell Harbor is used for shipping and receiving conventional, roll-on/roll-off, and containerized general cargo. Owned by the City of Wrangell and operated by Boyer Alaska Barge Line, Inc., the barge ramp is equipped with a pneumatic system to raise and lower the transfer bridge, and there are over two acres of open storage at the rear of the ramp. The Port of Wrangell Barge Ramp has berthing space of 121.9 meters (400 feet) with alongside depth of 6.9 meters (20 feet).
Also located in Wrangell Harbor, the City of Wrangell owns the Cargo Wharf. Alaska Marine Lines and Northland Services, Inc. operate the wharf for shipping and receiving containerized general cargo. At the rear of the facility is about 809 square meters (8.7 thousand square feet) of paved open storage, and there is more open storage available. The Port of Wrangell's Cargo Wharf has berthing space of 91.4 meters (300 feet) with alongside depth of 9.8 meters (32 feet).
The State of Alaska owns the Port of Wrangell's Fish and Game Float, which is operated jointly by the City, Campbell Towing Company, and the US Forest Service. The Fish and Game Float provides mooring for up to 36 commercial and government-owned vessels and towboats. This Port of Wrangell float offers berthing space of 148.7 meters (488 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
The City of Wrangell operates the State-owned Inner Harbor Floats in the Port of Wrangell's Inner Harbor each of Shakes Island. The Inner Harbor Floats provide mooring for commercial and recreational vessels. With berthing space for about 142 vessels and alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet), the connecting float has three 5.2-meter (17-foot) stalls.
The State of Alaska owns, and the City of Wrangell operates, the Reliance Harbor Float in the Inner Harbor, where the Harbormaster's office is located. The Port of Wrangell's Reliance Harbor Float provides mooring for commercial and recreational vessels. The float has berthing space of 205.4 meters (674 feet) that will accommodate about 86 vessels with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
Also owned by the State of Alaska and operated by the City of Wrangell, the Seaplane Float is located in the Inner Harbor. Providing landing for seaplanes, the Port of Wrangell's Seaplane Float has berthing space of 97.5 meters (320 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
About 6.4 kilometers (four miles south) of the Port of Wrangell are the Shoemaker Bay Harbor Floats with berthing space for about 259 vessels. The State of Alaska owns the floats, and the City of Wrangell operates them. Float A is 92.7-by-2.4 meters (304-by-8 feet) and has both 14.6-meter (48-foot) and 18.9-meter (62-foot) stalls. The connecting float has 6.1-meter (20-foot) stalls on the shore side. Float B is 87.8-by-2.4 meters (288-by-8 feet) with 12.2-meter (40-foot) stalls. These Port of Wrangell floats have alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
The Standard Oil Float in the Port of Wrangell is owned by the State and operated by the City to moor commercial and recreational vessels. Located in the Inner Harbor, the approach float has 5.2-meter (17-foot) and 6.1-meter (20-foot) stalls. The Port of Wrangell's Standard Oil Float has berthing space of 102.7 meters (337 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
The State of Alaska owns and operates the Port of Wrangell Ferry Terminal Dock to support loading and landing for passenger and vehicular ferry traffic. The dock has a terminal building with a staging area and paved parking at the rear. The Ferry Terminal Dock in the Port of Wrangell offers berthing space of 190.8 meters (626 feet) with alongside depth of 7.3 meters (24 feet).
Wrangell Seafoods, Inc. owns and operates their own wharf in the Port of Wrangell Inner Harbor. Used to receive seafood and ice fishing vessels, the Wrangell Seafoods Wharf has a cannery and seafood processing plant. The wharf has berthing space of 9.1 meters (30 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
Breakwater Seafoods owns and operates facilities at the Port of Wrangell Wharf and Float in the Inner Harbor. Used to receive seafood and ice fishing vessels, the wharf has a seafood processing plant at the rear. It has berthing space of 10.7 meters (35 feet) with alongside depth of 1.2 meters (4 feet).
Delta Western, Inc., has facilities on the Port of Wrangell Dock to receive petroleum products and to fuel vessels in the Inner Harbor. The dock is connected to seven storage tanks at the rear with total capacity for 10.7 thousand barrels by six pipelines (five 4-inch and one 2-inch). There are 10 hose stations available on this Port of Wrangell float, which has berthing space of 27.4 meters (90 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
Sea Level Seafoods, Inc. owns and operates facilities at the Port of Wrangell Wharf for receiving seafood and icing fishing vessels. Located about two miles south of the Port of Wrangell, there is a seafood processing plant at the rear of the wharf, which has berthing space of 27.4 meters (90 feet) with alongside depth of 1.8 meters (6 feet).
Silver Bay Logging, Inc. owns and operates the Shoemaker Bay Wharf about nine kilometer (5.6 miles) south of the Port of Wrangell. The Wharf is used for receiving logs and for shipping wood chips and lumber. At the rear of the wharf are about 14 acres of open storage area with capacity for 16 million board feet of lumber and seven million board feet of logs. The Port of Wrangell's Shoemaker Bay Wharf has berthing space of 97.5 meters (320 feet) with alongside depth of 9.8 meters (32 feet).
Wrangell Oil, Inc. owns and operates facilities at the Port of Wrangell Dock to receive petroleum products and fuel vessels. Located in the Inner Harbor, a float extends from the north side of the pier for mooring of recreational vessels. This Port of Wrangell dock is connected to seven storage tanks (total capacity of almost six thousand barrels) at the rear of the dock , and there are eight hose stations available on the float. The Port of Wrangell Oil dock offers berthing space of 36.6 meters (120 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
