Port of Tianjin
Port Commerce

The Port of Tianjin is owned by the Chinese state; however, it operates as an independent corporation with its own commercial and financial activities. The Tianjin Municipality People's Government is the port owner, and the municipal government appoints the board of the Tianjin Port Group.

The Tianjin Port Group (TPG) is the holding company and ultimate controlling body for most Port of Tianjin operations. TPG is the port landowner and the primary port operator in the Port of Tianjin, and it holds some of the Port Authority's supervisory roles. Through its 69 subordinate or affiliated units, the Tianjin Port Group runs nearly all Port of Tianjin operations, and it employs about 40 thousand people.

The municipal government supervises and administers the activities of the Port of Tianjin. When the Tianjin Port Authority was incorporated into the Tianjin Port Group in 2004, primary responsibility for the Port of Tianjin passed to the Tianjin Transportation and Port Authority (TTPA). The TTPA implements state policies, laws, and regulations and licenses, audits, and certifies businesses that operate in the port, particularly the terminals.

The Tianjin Port Group's major operating subsidiary is the Tianjin Port Development Company Ltd. (TPD), the major shareholder of the Tianjin Port Holdings Company Ltd. (TPC). Through the holdings company, the Tianjin Port Development Company controls terminals and cargo-handling activities in the Port of Tianjin. The Tianjin Port Group controls strategic planning, utilities, and port-related services. The Tianjin Port Group is a party to 53 joint ventures in the Port of Tianjin.

The Port of Tianjin is always open. It is a complete full-service port that handles all types of cargoes including containers, liquid and dry bulk, general cargo, and vehicles. It also serves passengers.

Formerly known as the Port of Tanggu, the modern Port of Tianjin is the maritime gateway to Beijing. Located on the western shores of Bohai Bay in the Haihe River estuary, the Port of Tianjin is about 170 kilometers (about 105 miles) southeast of Beijing and 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) east of Tianjin city.

The Port of Tianjin is the core of Tianjin's Binhai New Area, a major special economic zone for northern China. The Port of Tianjin is the biggest manmade port on China's mainland. Covering 10.7 thousand hectares (107 square kilometers), the Port of Tianjin contains a 21.5 kilometer (about 13 mile) quay shoreline and more than 100 production berths. Autonomous companies (joint ventures or subsidiaries of the Tianjin Port Group) operate the production terminals in the Port of Tianjin. Logistics companies process cargoes.

In 2010, the Port of Tianjin handled 413 million tons of cargo and over 10 million TEUs of containerized cargo, ranking fourth in the world's ports for tonnage and eleventh for container traffic. The Port of Tianjin welcomes from 140 to 160 new ocean-going vessels each day. In 2010, the Port of Tianjin recorded more than 97 thousand ship movements, including about 70 thousand ships of more than 60 meters (197 feet) in length.

The Port of Tianjin covers an area of about 20 thousand hectares (200 square kilometers), including 4.7 thousand hectares (47 square kilometers) of land area. The navigation channel is 17.4 meters (57.1 feet) and can accommodate vessels to 200 thousand DWT.

  • Port Areas

The Port of Tianjin is made up of five main areas: Beijiang, Haihe, Nanjiang, Beigang, and Dongjiang. The Tianjin Lingang Industrial area is being constructed south of the Nanjiang Port Area.

The Port of Tianjin's Beijiang Port Area is home to the original Tanggu New Port as well as new port facilities on reclaimed land. Covering about 3.6 thousand hectares (36.8 thousand square kilometers), the Beijiang Port Area in the Port of Tianjin has almost 19 kilometers (1.3 thousand miles) of coastline. It is the Port of Tianjin's primary administrative and service area. In addition to general cargo and container terminals, the Port of Tianjin's Beijiang Port Area contains the port's Free Trade Zone, the Container Logistics Center, and the Tianjin Port Trade and Shipping Service Area.

The Haihe Port Area contains the Port of Tianjin's riverine docks on a 39.5-kilometer (24.5-mile) stretch from the Haihe Second Tidal Barrier to the Xingang Shipping Lock. The Haihe Port Area was at one time the core of the old Tanggu port. As more areas have been converted to riverfront real estate, the number of wharves in the Port of Tianjin's Haihe Port Area has decreased.

In 2003, Port of Tianjin's Haihe Port Area included 56 production berths and 83 berths on 7.1 thousand meters (23.3 thousand feet) of quay. When work began on the Tanggu central business district in the Port of Tianjin, many existing facilities were demolished. However, industrial expansions upriver will probably mean the recovery of some berths. The Port of Tianjin is planning for six different production areas in the Haihe Port Area that will cover an area of 970 hectares (9.7 square kilometers) and include 21 kilometers (13 miles) of quays, and 70 berths that can handle total throughput of 2.42 million tons of cargo.

The Nanjiang Port Area in the Port of Tianjin sits on a 16-kilometer (9.9-mile) artificial island that covers about 2.6 thousand hectares (26 square kilometers) with a 14.2-kilometer (8.8 mile) shoreline on the north side and a 12-kilometer (7.5 mile) shoreline on the south side. The Port of Tianjin's Nanjiang Port Area is home to the bulk cargo terminals, particularly coal and oil terminals and terminals handling dry and liquid bulk cargoes.

The Beigang Port Area in the Port of Tianjin contains a 2.4 hectare barge wharf with minimal capabilities. Located on the New Yongding River estuary, plans have been developed to expand the Beigang area to support the Binhai tourism area. These new Port of Tianjin facilities will include one 230-meter (754-foot) and one 150-meter (492-foot) wharf, both of which will support passenger and cargo ships in the Port of Tianjin. To the north in the river's mouth is the Beigang Fishing Harbor.

The Dongjiang Port Area is in the northeast basin of the Port of Tianjin. It is located on a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) long, three-kilometer (1.9-mile) wide artificial peninsula. Covering 3.3 thousand hectares (33 square kilometers), the Dongjiang Port Area is Port of Tianjin's newest area.

While it is still being developed, the Port of Tianjin's Dongjiang Port Area houses a new container terminal, a thousand-hectare (ten square kilometer) bonded port area, and a new container terminal. When complete, the Port of Tianjin's Dongjiang Port Area will be a sophisticated complex with three zones: an area for terminals; a service zone with office with space for offices, residences, and leisure facilities; and a logistics processing zone for the bonded port area. The new Port of Tianjin leisure area will center on yachting piers and the cruise terminal and will include an artificial beach.

The new Dagukou Port Area in the Port of Tianjin will house the Tianjin Lingang Harbor Industrial Zone. Located south of the Nanjiang Port Area, the new Port of Tianjin Dagukou Port Area will have capacity to handle 100 million tons per year. The present Dagukou Port Area contains the ship-building cluster of facilities.

  • Channels

Approaches to the Port of Tianjin include several shipping channels and the Haihe River. The Main shipping channel is 39.5 kilometers (24.5 miles) long. It begins at the Port of Tianjin's VTS control area gate line (37 kilometers or 20 nautical miles) from the VTS control tower. The main channel ends at the beginning of the Chuanzhadong Channel.

The Main Shipping Channel in the Port of Tianjin can accommodate vessels of 300 thousand DWT at high tide and of 200 thousand DWT at other times. In late 2010, work was finished in the Port of Tianjin to allow two-way traffic for 250 thousand DWT vessels. The work widened the Main Shipping Channel breakwater mouth to 1100 meters (3.6 thousand feet) wide and the bottom to 420 meters (1.4 thousand feet) wide with a depth of 19.5 meters (64 feet).

Upgrades began in April 2011 that will make the Port of Tianjin's Main Shipping Channel suitable for all-tide two-way traffic for vessels of as much as 300 thousand DWT. The project will make the Port of Tianjin Main Shipping Channel 407 meters (1.3 thousand feet) wide, 21 meters (10.8 feet) deep, and 33.3 kilometers (20.7 miles) long.

The 27.5-kilometer (17.1-mile) Dagusha Channel in the Port of Tianjin is separate from the main channel and extends from the entrance to the end of the fairway. In late 2010, the Port of Tianjin's Dagusha Channel was dredged to a depth of 12.5 meters (41 feet) to allow one-way traffic for 100 thousand DWT vessels.

The Dagusha Channel in the Port of Tianjin is undergoing further upgrades to expand the bottom to 200 meters (656 feet) wide and 14.8 meters (48.6 feet) deep, allowing two-way traffic for 100 thousand DWT vessels. In the longer term, the Port of Tianjin's Dagusha Channel will be dredged so that it can accommodate ships of up to 200 thousand DWT.

The Port of Tianjin's 8.5-kilometer (5.3-mile) North Branch Channel extends from the point where it splits from the Main channel to the northern end of the basin. With a depth of 15 meters (49.2 feet), the junction of the Port of Tianjin's North Branch Channel where it meets the Main Shipping Channel was widened to 765 meters (2.5 thousand feet) to allow traffic to merge.

  • Anchorages

The Port of Tianjin contains seven major anchorages, all of which are designated for waiting for berths, quarantine, inspection, and pilotage. These anchorages offer limited shelter from rough seas and bad weather. Especially in winter, anchor-dragging is common. Because the bottom hold is poor, care should be taken in choosing anchorage spots.

Located on both sides of the Port of Tianjin Main Shipping Channel, the Dagukou North, Dagukou South, and Chemical Bulk anchorages are east of the Dagu Lighthouse. They are used by most of the Port of Tianjin's traffic and can become crowded, increasing the risk of collisions. Two deep-water anchorages in the Port of Tianjin are located in the deeper areas of the Bohai Bay. One of these is capable of handling very large vessels of over 150 thousand DWT.

Two more anchorages are located on the south side of the Port of Tianjin's Main Shipping Channel. Anchorage 5 covers two thousand hectares and has depths from 16 to 18 meters (52.3 to 59 feet), accommodating larger vessels. Although it is not used often, the Port of Tianjin Anchorage 6 is operational and covers four thousand hectares with depths from 10 to 13 meters (32.1 to 42.7 feet).

The terminal and support buildings cover 1.5 hectares of developed surface. The terminal serves passenger ships, roll-on/roll-off ferries, automobile carriers, and cruise ships. The K-1 Berth has a floating bridge that supports all-tide service for RO-RO vessels, and it is the most-used berth for harbor pilots.

Four major ferry lines use the Port of Tianjin Xingang Passenger Terminal. The fleet of three RO-RO ferry boats travel two international routes between the Port of Tianjin and Japan's Kobe and between the Port of Tianjin and South Korea's Incheon and two domestic routes between the Port of Tianjin and Yantai and between the Port of Tianjin and Dalian. At present, the ferries only operate during the summer.
